Dalhousie Receives Intellectual Property Funding

Dalhousie University is pleased to announce that the Industry Liaison and Innovation (ILI) office has been awarded a grant of $200,000 from NSERC (Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada) to promote the development of intellectual property at the university.  The funding was part of a $1.5 million award to Atlantic Universities. 

Dalhousie is using the funding to hire additional human resources for the and ILI has already recruited two experienced technology managers to complement the existing team, which is already in place. 

Ms. Andrea McCormick joined the office in July as Technology Manager in the Health Science area.  Ms. McCormick has a M.Sc. in Chemistry from UBC and has worked for the last 4 years at Genentech Inc. in South San Francisco, starting in research and most recently as a project manager for pre-clinical development.  Genentech (NYSE: DNA) is among the world?s leading biotechnology companies, with an enterprise value of $US 87 billion and sales in 2005 of over $US 7 billion.

Dr. Elizabeth Cheu joined the office in August as Technology Manager for the Faculties of Science and Social Sciences.  Dr. Cheu has a Ph.D. from UBC in bioinorganic chemistry and has spent the last 5 years in industry.  Most recently Dr. Cheu managed a large patent portfolio for Cardiome Pharma Corp. (TSX: COM and NASDAQ: CRME), a successful B.C. based, Biotechnology Company specializing in cardiovascular therapeutics.

?Both Dr. Cheu and Ms. McCormick will be excellent additions to Dalhousie?s commercialization efforts and will bring strong skill sets and industry experience to the Halifax community”, commented Dr. Ronald Layden, Executive Director of the ILI office.
