On behalf of Dalhousie University's Board of Governors, Chair Jim Spatz today announced that Dr. Tom Traves will be appointed to a new term. At the end of his new term in 2013, Dr. Traves will have been president for 18 years, among the longest-serving presidents in the history of the university.
"I am very pleased to be able to announce the reappointment of Dr. Traves," says Mr. Spatz. "During his time at Dalhousie, the institution has continued to grow in enrollment, stature and reputation. As importantly, Dalhousie has attained ongoing financial stability under his leadership, which will serve it well during uncertain economic times. In addition to any challenges, I am delighted that Tom will be there to steer the university toward the opportunities that lie ahead for Dalhousie in the coming years as well."
Dr. Traves has been president of Dalhousie since 1995. Prior to coming to Dalhousie he was a professor in the department of history at the University of New Brunswick where he was also Vice President, Academic, and on faculty in the history department at York where he served as Dean of Arts. He currently serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada, and as chair of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Council of Nova Scotia University Presidents and the Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust Fund. He is also the Canadian representative on the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and vice-chair of the Association of Atlantic Universities. In 2002 he was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal.
